Wow, I am really glad that I joined the Dystopian Book Hop! When I first thought about a book to giveaway, I automatically thought of The Handmaid’s Tale by Margaret Atwood. I read this book for a college course about History of the Culture of the United States in the 20th Century. At first I thought it was one of the most bizarre books I have ever read! Then I thought maybe I’m really weird for liking it! I think the book gets more and more interesting as it gets near the end. I was really sad that the book was over. The film The Handmaid’s Tale with the late Natasha Richardson does not do this book justice, but it gives you a good idea of the story.

Another dystopian novel that I have a love/hate relationship with is The Giver by Lois Lowry. I first read this book when I was taking a literacy course for my bachelor’s degree in elementary education. At that point, I didn’t think it was appropriate for elementary, (and most) middle school age children. After visiting this book once again while pursuing my master’s degree, I still think this book is more appropriate for high school students and beyond. In a word, this book is about euthanasia. I think that people were very excited to talk about this hot topic when Jack Kevorkian was around, but it seems to have fallen on the back burner in the media for the past few years.

While doing some research on Amazon, I saw some exciting news that there are 3 other books in the series! Where have I been? If you’ve read The Giver, have you read Gathering Blue, Messenger and Son?
