I love Banned Books Week. I think most of the best books have been banned for one ridiculous reason or another because they get people talking. I wanted to refresh my memory of some of the most frequently challenged books, and saw that Flowers for Algernon by Daniel Keyes was on the list. I LOVE that book. It’s a science fiction book about a mentally challenged man that gets an operation to make him a genius. I read the novel in high school, and got to teach the short story during my first year of teaching.
Another book on the list was The Handmaid’s Tale by Margaret Atwood. If you like dystopian novels like The Hunger Games Trilogy, you will probably like The Handmaid’s Tale. When I read the description of it, I thought it sounded VERY bizarre, but I actually ended up enjoying it! I read this for a college history course that was about American culture in the 2oth century. How ironic that some of the characters in the book were not allowed to read!
